    About Kearney News

Kearney News is a growing independent UK digital news platform focused on delivering engaging, informative and accessible content to readers across the country. As we continue to launch and expand our online presence, we are looking for enthusiastic and creative individuals to join our editorial team as Volunteer Article Contributors.

This role is designed for aspiring writers, journalists and media professionals who are looking to gain valuable experience within the news and publishing industry. Whether you are currently studying at college or university, recently graduated, or simply passionate about writing and current affairs, this opportunity offers a chance to develop real-world journalism and content creation skills within a supportive environment.

No previous experience or formal qualifications are required for this role. We believe passion, creativity and willingness to learn are just as important as experience. Full support, guidance and training will be provided to help contributors build confidence and improve their writing skills over time.

    About the Role

As a Volunteer Article Contributor, you will assist with researching and writing articles for publication on Kearney News. Content may include UK current affairs, lifestyle, entertainment, community stories, technology, business, health, travel, cost of living topics and other trending or evergreen subjects relevant to British readers.

Contributors will have the flexibility to work remotely and around existing commitments such as education, employment or personal responsibilities. This makes the role especially suitable for students studying journalism, media, publishing, communications, English or digital marketing courses who are looking to build a portfolio of published work.

You will gain practical insight into how online news platforms operate, including content planning, article formatting, editorial standards and digital publishing processes.

    Key Responsibilities

    Responsibilities may include:

    • Researching UK news stories and trending topics
    • Writing engaging and accurate articles for online publication
    • Assisting with evergreen content and feature pieces
    • Suggesting story ideas and content opportunities
    • Following editorial guidelines and publishing standards
    • Proofreading and editing content before submission
    • Working positively with editors and the wider team
    • Meeting agreed deadlines where possible
    • Learning and developing digital journalism skills

Contributors will not be expected to know everything immediately. Guidance and support will be available throughout the role to help individuals grow in confidence and ability.

    Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for motivated individuals who have a genuine interest in media, journalism, publishing or online writing. Successful contributors should be reliable, creative and eager to learn within a fast-moving digital environment.

    This opportunity would particularly suit:

    • College students studying media or journalism
    • University students within publishing or communications
    • Aspiring journalists and writers
    • Individuals looking to gain media industry experience
    • Anyone interested in building a professional writing portfolio

Applicants do not need professional journalism experience to apply. We welcome people from all backgrounds who are passionate about storytelling, news and content creation.

    Skills and Qualities

While experience is not essential, the following qualities would be beneficial:

    • Good written English skills
    • Interest in UK news and current affairs
    • Creativity and attention to detail
    • Ability to research information online
    • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
    • Good communication and time management skills
    • Ability to work independently when required

    What You Will Gain

Although this is currently a volunteer role during our launch and growth phase, contributors will receive valuable industry experience that can support future career opportunities.

    Benefits include:

    • Published article credits
    • Experience working within a digital newsroom environment
    • Portfolio development opportunities
    • Editorial guidance and mentoring
    • Flexible remote working
    • Opportunity to develop journalism and writing skills
    • Potential references for future employment or university applications

For students and aspiring writers, this role can provide valuable experience that strengthens CVs, personal statements and future job applications within the media and publishing sector.

    Diversity & Inclusion

Kearney News welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, communities and experience levels. We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where contributors feel respected, encouraged and valued.
