Andrew Stonehouse, 56, was convicted following a case heard at Teesside Crown Court relating to offences committed in the 1990s against an underage girl. The court heard the abuse had a long-lasting impact on the victim, who later came forward to report what had happened.
During proceedings, Stonehouse denied parts of the allegations and attempted to shift blame onto the victim. However, the judge rejected his version of events, describing the victim as a truthful and credible witness who had faced the difficult task of recalling traumatic childhood experiences in court.
The victim described years of emotional impact following the abuse, including struggles with trust, guilt, and mental health. The court acknowledged the lasting harm caused by the offences and praised the victim’s courage in coming forward.
Stonehouse was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely. He was also made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order preventing contact with the victim and restricting unsupervised contact or work involving children under 16.
An NSPCC spokesperson said the offender “knew what he had done was wrong” and criticised attempts to blame the victim during the trial. The organisation added that survivors should be supported and believed when they come forward.
The case serves as another reminder that abuse can remain hidden for many years, and that convictions can still be secured long after offences take place.
