A major police investigation is underway after the bodies of three women were discovered off the coast of Brighton
A major police investigation is underway after the bodies of three women were discovered off the coast of Brighton, shocking the local community and prompting a significant emergency response.
Authorities were alerted late overnight following reports of individuals in the water. Coastguard teams, police units, and emergency services were quickly deployed, launching a coordinated search operation along the shoreline. The bodies were recovered in the early hours of the morning.
Police have not yet released the identities of the victims, pending notification of next of kin. Early indications suggest that the women may have entered the water together, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
Detectives have stated that, at this stage, there is no immediate evidence pointing to foul play. However, they emphasised that the investigation is in its early stages and all possibilities remain under consideration.
Forensic teams have been working at the scene throughout the day, and parts of the beach were temporarily closed to the public. Officers are also appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area overnight to come forward.
Local residents expressed shock at the incident. “It’s not something you expect to happen here,” said one nearby business owner. “Everyone is just trying to understand what’s going on.”
Support services have been made available for those affected, as the community grapples with the tragic news
Officers have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the discovery, reports the Daily Star.
At a press conference held at the scene along the shoreline, Sussex Police Chief Superintendent Adam Hays described it as a “tragic incident”. “Our priority right now is to identify all three women and contact their next of kin,” he said.
“I know this incident will be highly distressing for the community, and we are working hard with our partners to understand exactly what has happened. This includes gathering and reviewing CCTV in the surrounding area.” He added that the coastguard is not searching for any further individuals.
