Russia Intensifies Drone Campaign in Ukraine Amid Rising NATO Alarm
Russia has launched one of its most extensive drone offensives of the year against Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian officials reported that hundreds of drones were deployed overnight, targeting critical infrastructure including energy facilities, transport networks, and residential areas.
Emergency services across several regions worked through the night to respond to fires, power outages, and casualties. Early reports confirm multiple fatalities, though authorities say the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, describing them as “deliberate terror against civilian life” and calling on Western allies to accelerate the delivery of air defence systems. “Every delay costs lives,” he said in a statement.
The scale of the assault has raised concerns across Europe. Slovakia temporarily closed several border crossings with Ukraine as a precautionary measure, citing fears that the intensity of strikes near western Ukraine could pose spillover risks. Poland also activated elements of its air defence systems during the attack.
At a NATO security summit in Bucharest, Secretary General Mark Rutte issued a stark warning, stating that Russia remains “the most immediate and serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security.” He urged member states to increase military production and maintain long-term support for Ukraine.
Military analysts suggest the latest strikes may be aimed at weakening Ukraine’s infrastructure ahead of anticipated operations later in the year. “This appears to be part of a broader strategy to exhaust Ukraine’s resilience,” said one defence expert.
The situation remains fluid, with further attacks expected as tensions continue to rise.
